Chapter 08: Transactional Analysis

You are a lieutenant in charge of the fugitive section at your police department. You report to the captain of operations. At work on a Monday morning, the captain comes into your office and says “Something happened at our sub-office on Friday. You need to find out about it and report back to me.”

The captain is a friend of the sergeant who runs the sub-office, and was apparently called by the sergeant. The captain did not tell you anything about the incident. He apparently expected you to call the sergeant, find out the facts, and then report back to him.

Based on the captain’s inquiry, you believe that the captain is involved in a petty power play. You do, however, call the sergeant and ask him what happened. The sergeant tells you that a prisoner was being transported to jail and the brass loop on the waist chains (that the handcuffs go through) broke. The sergeant in charge of the sub-office tells you that he does not believe that the chain breaking appears to be related to an escape attempt. He believes that the chain was worn and weak.

Questions

  1. Do you pass the sergeant’s observations and information to the captain?

    Correct Answer

You pass the information on. You do not wish to give the incident any special attention, so you do not make an issue about the captain’s game playing.

  2. Do you see any way of improving the working relationship between you and the captain?

    Correct Answer

You have to realize that there appears to be some reason the captain resents you. Since the captain is one who is involved in power plays, perhaps he or she feels threatened by you.
To improve your working relationship, you may consider meeting with the captain, asking to speak candidly. Tell the captain your concerns and your reasons for having those concerns.

Remember, in your career you will be required to work with people you do not like or who do not like you.

  3. Would you approach the chief to address the captain’s game playing?

    Correct Answer

No. This is probably the worst thing that you can do. If the captain did not consider you to be an enemy before, he or she will after you do this.
