Thin-section photomicrograph showing different quartz and feldspar grains and a matrix of darker-colored clay minerals. The “sutured” grain contacts in the upper left are a result of pressure solution. Because of the clay matrix in the rest of the rock, none of the other grains were in mutual contact during burial, so there are no other sutured grain-grain contacts. Also, the curvature of the matrix around some of the grains is a result of compaction of the clay matrix.
