Ternary classification of sandstones on the basis of their mineral composition. The three end members (100%) of the triangle are quartz, feldspar, and rock (lithic) fragments. To name a sandstone (arkose, litharenite, quartzite, etc.), the proportion of each member is determined and the resulting composition is plotted as a point on the triangle. Where the point plots on the triangle defines the name of the sandstone. Classification after Folk (1968).
