- Received his PhD in Physics from Johns Hopkins University, 1969
- Held a postdoctoral position at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Illinois
- Received a grant from the Swedish Research Council in 1973 to build up a research group in theoretical atomic physics
- Morrison's research and teaching at Chalmers University of Technology in Goteborg, Sweden was done in cooperation with Ingvar Lindgren. Together they published the book, "Atomic Many-Body Theory", in 1982.
- Joined the faculty of the physics department at the University of Louisville where he has carried on research in atomic and molecular physics, and has taught modern physics since 1992
