Benke and Cushing’s beautiful masterpiece, Rivers
of North America, has won several awards, including
the 2005
Award for Excellence in Professional and Scholarly Publishing by
the Association of American Publishers (AAP),and Best
Reference 2005, by Library Journal.
Arthur C. Benke has been Professor of Biology at the University
of Alabama since 1984 before which he served on the faculty of
the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was coordinator of the
Graduate Program in Aquatic Biology at the University of Alabama
for 16 years. He has published widely in scientific journals and
books, primarily on the ecology of invertebrates in rivers, streams
and wetlands. He has served on the editorial boards on the journals Ecology,
Freshwater Biology, and the Journal of the North American
Benthological Society (NABS), is a former President of NABS,
and has served on scientific advisory committees for American Rivers,
and the Kissimmee River Restoration Evaluation Program.
Colbert E. Cushing was a Senior Research Scientist with the Battelle-Pacific
Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Washington, until semi-retiring
in 1996. He was an Adjunct Professor at Washington State University-Tri
Cities, and currently holds an Affiliate Faculty appointment at
Colorado State University and does private consulting. He was one
of the scientists instrumental in the formulation and testing of
the River Continuum Concept. He has published widely in scientific
journals and books, was the lead editor of River and Stream
Ecosystems, and co-authored Streams: Their Ecology and
Life. He served on the editorial boards for the journals Ecology and Journal
of the North American Benthological Society (NABS) and is
past president of NABS.
