Table 6 Notes : Douglas, Boeing (Douglas Products Division) &
Lockheed Aircraft
In the early 1990's the MD-80 series
was re-engined and stretched (175 seats) to give rise to the MD-90 series and later shrunk
(100 seats) for the MD-95 variant. The Douglas DC10 is no longer is production having been
superseded by the updated and re-engineered MD-11. This is a medium to long range (7000nm)
aircraft carrying over 300 passengers. The aircraft has three engines (two wing mounted
and one installed at the base of the fin). The MD-12 is a high capacity (500 seats) long
range (8000nm) four-engined, double deck aircraft proposed to compete with the stretched
B747 designs. As a result of the merger with Boeing MD80 and MD90 production will
terminated in 2000 along with the MD11. Thus the Boeing 717 (formerly MD95) will be the
only remaining Douglas product in production.
The Lockheed L1011 'Tri-Star' with a
configuration similar to the DC-10 first entered service in 1972 and is no longer in
production although there are still several aircraft in commercial operation.
