Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria

Abstract
This chapter considers advances in Location-Based Services (LBS). Three development phases are identified – technology-driven, data-driven and individual user-centred. This is followed by a consideration of three emerging research topics – indoor navigation, integrating social media, and the design of interfaces. The chapter concludes by identifying some of the major research and development challenges remaining for LBS.
